Anti vaccination play group advertised in perth

The Australian Health Practitioners Council (AHP) says a new group promoting vaccination in Perth is misleading parents.

The group, Vaccinate the Prey, released an advertisement in Perth today which says: "Admission cost about AU$5 at The Gungans Bar. It's available daily for kids under 11".

Dr. James MacKinnon, of the AHP, said the ad was completely out of date.

"[We] had no idea the Gungans Bar existed," he said.

He said a public health event was scheduled for Saturday for parents to discuss the health benefits of immunisation, and vaccinations are well supported.

AHP also recommends parents not give immunisations for anyone under 18.

"As an expert in the area of immunisation, I have a duty to educate and support patients, parents, doctors and others involved in immunisation. I'm not interested in promoting this message, which is contrary to the guidance in the Australian immunisation handbook," he said.

Mr MacKinnon said the message the campaign put out was inaccurate.

"We were concerned at what it says about the benefits of immunisation, particularly those of children in particular and also children in families who have children of certain immunodeficiency conditions," he said.

"You cannot be 'all vaccines will be equal' or 'all immunisations are the same'. As an expert in immunisation, I see no evidence whatsoever to suggest this."

Dr MacKinnon said he and other immunisation experts from AHP had seen similar ads in Perth in previous campaigns.

"At the time I was not aware of this and certainly did not understand why it was being brought forward with such haste. But after reviewing the latest findings of AHP, I feel no more need for public education about the importance of immunisation, although some aspects of that vaccination need to remain under wraps," he said.

When contacted, The Gungans Bar refused to issue the ad. They said the advertisement contained the word 'ad' twice.

A spokesperson for the pub, which serves an estimated 25,000 customers a week, said they were unaware of the controversy when they received the advertisement.

"We don't comment on the motives or intentions of advertising campaigns," the pub spokeswoman said.

The AAP reported the advertisement to the AHP and they investigated to determine what they felt was appropriate.

"We've had more than 10 complaints about this campaign and are currently working with the group to ensure it does not continue," Dr MacKinnon said.
